The Court of Justice of the European Union has rejected at first instance an appeal against sanctions against Gennady Timchenko, a russian tycoon and longtime ally of the Russian president who was blacklisted after russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The first instance at the Luxembourg-based EU Court of Justice rejected similar appeals by Timchenko's wife, Elena, as well as Russian businessman Dmitry Pumpyansky and his wife, Galina.

Gennadiy Timchenko resigned from the management of russia's largest private natural gas producer Novatek last year in March after 27 countries imposed sanctions on him.

The EU has also blacklisted Dmitry Pumpyansky, claiming that he is a billionaire whose business supports and benefits from cooperation with the russian state.
