This is reported by Yle.

‘The confiscations are linked to russia's military operations in Ukraine, based on a claim filed by the Ukrainian state-owned energy company Naftogaz and its subsidiaries,’ the report states.

It is noted that in the past, the service mainly confiscated russian property, but this year the confiscation specifically concerned funds.

Approximately €3.7 million, which has been provisionally seized, belonged to a now-defunct EU cooperation programme on external borders, jointly implemented by Finland and russia. The project, which was overseen by the Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy, was aimed at developing border regions between the countries.

“According to the bailiff’s document, russia paid its financial contribution of 3.7 million euros before the start of the aggressive war against Ukraine in 2022. The border cooperation programme was suspended following the full-scale invasion, and the money remained with the ministry, from which it has now been seized,” the statement reads.

In total, since 2024, the Finnish National Enforcement Authority has confiscated russian assets worth over 40 million euros.
