This is the second tanker from russia’s ‘shadow fleet’ to be detained by the French military.

According to the French Maritime Prefecture, the tanker was flying the flag of Mozambique and was sailing from Murmansk in russia.

The detention operation was carried out under Article 110 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The vessel is suspected of flying a false flag.

It is noted that the operation was conducted jointly with the United Kingdom. The military are currently escorting the tanker to a holding area, where further inspections await it.

In his statement, the French President emphasised that this demonstrates that the war in Iran is not diverting Paris’s attention from its support for Ukraine.

“These ships, which circumvent international sanctions and violate maritime law, are war profiteers. They seek to amass profits and finance russia’s war effort. We will not allow this,” Macron wrote.
