Professor Jovo Bakic made these remarks in an interview with the russian propaganda outlet RT Balkan, according to “European Pravda”.
The prospective MP from the “Student List” insists that sanctions against russia “will change nothing” and will instead harm Serbia.
“Sanctions from a small country like Serbia will not change anything for russia, but symbolically it will be very bad,” said Bakic.
He added that Serbia respects russia “as an important partner” and will therefore not change its policy towards Moscow.
“We respect russia both as a great power and as our historically important partner, and in many cases as our protector. In this regard (in the country’s foreign policy), there will be no changes,” stated Bakic.
He emphasised that Serbs “have endured UN sanctions, and we know very well what kind of trials these entail”.
Regarding supplies of russian energy resources, on which Serbia depends, as well as pressure from the EU to abandon them, Bakic noted that “we are not here to please foreigners, but to work in our national interests”. According to him, the “Student List” includes energy experts who will work on this issue.
The “Student List” won the early parliamentary elections in Serbia, securing almost 53 per cent of the vote.
On the evening of 25 October, former Serbian President and leader of the “United Serbia” electoral list, Aleksandar Vučić, conceded defeat.
The elections took place following nearly two years of student demonstrations against corruption and Vučić’s authoritarianism. The protests were triggered by the deaths of 16 people in 2024, when a canopy at the railway station in Novi Sad collapsed. Since then, the students have gained widespread public support.
