‘Our task is to completely replace the existing russian oil,’ said David Pochveria, CEO of Black Sea Petroleum (BSP), the company that operates the refinery.

In a comment to BM.ge, he said that the company plans to replace russian oil with supplies of Turkmen and Kazakhstani crude, as well as to use “other alternative sources”.

Potskhveria added that although BSP initially began operations using russian oil, the company is now actively working to diversify its oil sources, as the EU currently prohibits the import of petroleum products refined from russian oil.

Using alternative oil will remove these export restrictions and open up new markets for BSP. However, one of the main challenges is the start of Turkmen oil transit via Azerbaijan’s rail network.

“Unfortunately, and somewhat unexpectedly, rail transit through Azerbaijan in our direction has become more complicated. We reached an agreement on Turkmen oil several months ago, but its transport has been delayed,” explained Potskhveria.
