This has been reported by the russian media outlet RBC, citing a bank newsletter, customer reports and posts in relevant online chat groups.

Notifications regarding the closure of accounts were mainly received by russians without a valid residence permit in Portugal or by those who had not updated their status details with the bank.

At the same time, some holders of residence permits in the country, as well as russians working in EU member states, have also reported receiving such notifications.

The state-owned bank Caixa Geral de Depositos has long been one of the most accessible banks for russians in Portugal, particularly for participants in ‘golden visa’ programmes.

In the spring of 2026, some of the bank’s customers received requests to update their personal details and confirm their sources of income.

Some of those who subsequently received notices of account closure confirmed that they had either not previously provided the requested information or had done so late.
