This is stated in a press release from the Swedish Coast Guard, according to European Pravda.
As noted, the operation to detain the vessel was carried out near the city of Trelleborg with the support of the police.
The Coast Guard has launched a preliminary investigation on suspicion of violating maritime law due to the vessel's non-compliance with maritime requirements.
Based on national and international legislation, the Coast Guard considers the Caffa, sailing under the flag of Guinea, to be a ship that does not belong to any state.
Therefore, the Coast Guard considers that the Caffa did not exercise peaceful passage in Swedish territorial waters. Without a national flag, there is no state to guarantee the safety and seaworthiness of the vessel.
A national task force and a national coast guard team, as well as a police helicopter, boarded the Caffa in Swedish territorial waters.
The operation is currently underway at sea. The coast guard is processing information on board the vessel. Depending on how the situation develops, other authorities may also join the operation.
According to SVT, the ship is on Ukraine's sanctions list. According to the Ukrainian side, the ship was involved in the theft of grain from Crimea.
The ship sails under the Guinean flag, but according to the coast guard, the status of the flag remains unclear.
‘The Swedish state has the right to intervene in this case against a ship whose flag is extremely unclear, and we believe that it was registered under a false flag,’ said Mattias Lindholm, spokesman for the Coast Guard.
According to information from the ship, it was heading for St. Petersburg, russia.
