The russian vessel ‘Professor Molchanov’ has been seized in Norway

This was reported in a Telegram post by the company’s press office.

According to Naftogaz, the relevant decision was handed down by the District Court of Nur-Trums and Senja on 31 August; the seizure is intended to ensure compliance with the arbitral award ordering russia to pay approximately $4.22 billion, plus interest and costs, for the unlawful seizure of assets in the annexed Crimea.

The company reports that, under the court’s ruling, the vessel is not permitted to leave its current location – the port of Barentsburg in Svalbard.

“This is another important step towards restoring justice. We will continue to track down russian assets around the world until the compensation awarded to Naftogaz and other companies in the Group has been paid,” emphasised Serhiy Fedorenko, acting chairman of the board of Naftogaz.

The russian side has not yet responded to this.

In April 2023, the Arbitration Tribunal at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague ordered russia to pay Naftogaz of Ukraine $5 billion for losses caused by the seizure of the ‘Naftogaz Group’s’ assets in Crimea in 2014. This relates to compensation for Naftogaz’s losses and property lost in Crimea since 2014.
