According to LSEG vessel tracking data, the LNG carrier ‘Valera’, formerly known as ‘Veliky Novgorod’, loaded a shipment at the Portovaya plant in the Baltic Sea on 25 January and delivered it to the Beihai LNG terminal on Wednesday.
Portovaya, which has a production capacity of 1.5 million tonnes of LNG per year, began operations in September 2022. However, exports from the plant were suspended due to additional US sanctions imposed in January 2025 against russia in connection with the war in Ukraine, aimed at limiting the Kremlin’s ability to produce and export LNG and reducing revenue from this trade.
The first shipment from the plant following the hiatus was delivered to the terminal in December last year.
Another russian plant subject to sanctions, Arctic LNG-2, also supplies LNG to Beihai.
Before the sanctions were imposed, Portovaya shipped an average of two cargoes per month in winter. Since March 2025, apart from two shipments to China, the plant has been sending one cargo per month to the russian exclave of Kaliningrad.
In the early stages of its operation, most shipments from Portovaya were delivered to Turkey and Greece, and later the markets expanded to include China, Spain and Italy.
