The IWF Executive Committee has selected the host cities for four World Championships to be held between 2028 and 2030. In addition to Moscow, Pristina (Kosovo), Caracas (Venezuela) and Ahmedabad (India) have been awarded the right to organise the events.

In 2028, Pristina will host the World Youth Championships, whilst Caracas will host the World Junior Championships. The 2029 World Championships for adults will be held in Ahmedabad, and the following year the tournament will take place in Moscow. The IWF has not yet announced the exact dates and venue for the competition in the russian capital.

The 2030 World Championships will serve as a qualifying tournament for the 2032 Olympic Games.

“All the bids we received were excellent, and we are confident that the championships in your countries will be a great success,” said IWF Secretary-General José Quiñones.

This is the first time a world championship-level competition in an Olympic sport has been awarded to russia since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In July, the International Olympic Committee, in its updated guidelines, left the decision on organising tournaments in russia to the discretion of the relevant international federations.

The decision to hold the 2030 World Championships in Moscow came after the IWF changed its stance on the participation of athletes from russia and Belarus in its own tournaments. In June 2026, the federation allowed representatives of these countries to compete in international events under their national flags.
