Ukraine is going to confiscate the assets of Russian politician Tsekov

The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine has filed a lawsuit to confiscate the assets of Russian politician Sergey Tsekov.

"On 11 May 2023, the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine filed a lawsuit with the Supreme Anti-Corruption Court to impose a sanction under paragraph 1-1 part one of Article 4 of the Law of Ukraine 'On Sanctions' on Sergey Pavlovich Tsekov, a citizen of the Russian Federation (not deprived of Ukrainian citizenship) born on 28 September 1953, a native of Simferopol, Crimea, Ukrainian SSR, a senator of the Russian Federation, a representative in the Federation Council from the legislature of the Republic of Crimea," the ministry announced.

Sergey Tsekov is a former Ukrainian and subsequently Russian politician. He is the first member of the Federation Council from the Crimean authorities since 24 September 2014. 

Tsekov is one of the four deputies who voted against the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine on 16 July 1990.

After 2014, Sergey Tsekov became the peninsula's representative in the Federation Council. 

On 17 March 2014, due to the occupation of Crimea, the European Union put him on the sanctions list of persons whose assets are frozen in the EU and for whom visa restrictions have been imposed.

As Deputy Speaker of the Supreme Council of Crimea, Tsekov, together with Sergey Aksyonov, initiated the illegal resignation of the government of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. He involved Volodymyr Konstantinov in this case, threatening him with dismissal. He publicly acknowledged that Crimean MPs had initiated the invitation of Russian soldiers to seize the Supreme Council of Crimea. He was one of the first Crimean leaders to publicly demand that Crimea join Russia. A member of the Russian legislature who provides political and economic support to Russia's illegal attempts to annex sovereign Ukrainian territory through sham referendums.

On 12 March 2022, against the backdrop of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, he was added to the EU's expanded sanctions list, as well as sanctions imposed by Switzerland, Ukraine and New Zealand.
